The purpose of the deepening

Let's continue with our analogy. If the induction is entering the hall of the house, then the deepening would be to move into the back rooms of the house, deeper into the structure. The purpose of the deepening is to increase the level of relaxation, allowing you to enter a deeper level of trance which in turn increases the effectiveness of the posthypnotic suggestions you will be giving yourself.

How does it work?

Deepening techniques often include imagery relating to sinking deeper, becoming lighter or moving backwards which promotes a feeling of calm and progressive relaxation. Examples include imagery of descending in an elevator, drifting on fluffy white clouds or descending stairs slowly.

The deepening is simply another step in the journey to reaching that state of mind in which it becomes easier to change your behavior and/or beliefs.

Here is an example of a deepening technique that works rather well:

"Walking slowly but purposefully you arrive at the top of a beautiful staircase. There are ten exquisite steps hewn from the most expensive marble, descending into a fine and welcoming mist. The stairs are flanked by a shining mahogany railing that gleams in the faint warm light emanating from the mist. Your fingers touch the polished wood, exploring its satin finish and you can smell its delicate woody fragrance.

You count the steps as your bare feet touch the strangely warm marble of each level, counting down from ten and feeling yourself relax even deeper with each step, sinking slowly into the warm relaxing mist. Ten...nine...feeling much more relaxed now...eight...seven...deeper and deeper into the welcoming mist...six...five...you feel your body and mind relaxing...four...your mind is tranquil and empty...three...two...one...As you reach the last step, you realize that your level of relaxation has increased tenfold and you calmly look around you to see what the next exciting portion of your journey holds for you."
